Help your child learn about the new year while having fun with some of these preschool crafts.

Noisemakers:

Make noisemakers using paper plates.  Have your child paint, color or decorate a paper plate.  Fold the plate in half.  Fill with dried rice or popcorn seeds and close using tape, glue, or staples.  Add tissue paper around the edge and shake.  See the slide show for an example.

Spin art fireworks:

Put a paper plate or other circular piece of paper into a salad spinner.  Have your child add a small amount of paint and/or glitter.  Put the top on and have your child press the top to make it spin.  Make multiple fireworks using different colors, and different speeds, or have your child count to a certain number and then stop the spinner.  See the slide show for an example and check out No Time For Flash Cards to see their spin art Christmas ornaments.

Cone shaped party hats:

Make a triangle shape using 12 x 12 cardstock.  Cut out or have the children cut the triangle (if age appropriate).  The children can decorate the hat using crayons, paint, glitter, stickers, pom poms, etc.  Once they are done decorating their hat, roll it to make a cone shape that will fit your child's head.  Use glue or tape to keep the hat together.  Check out this party hat at Kaboose.com that uses foam rather than cardstock.

New years coloring pages:

Print out some new years coloring pages at apples4theteacher.com or about.com.

New Year's banner:

Print or draw the letters "H a p p y N e w Y e a r" on pieces of cardstock (one letter per cardstock).  Have the children paint or color the letters.  Punch holes in the top of each, add a piece of ribbon and hang.

Time capsules:

Create a time capsule using a can or jar.  Have your child decorate it using paper, paint, and other embellishments.  Find stuff around the house such as recent pictures of your child, artwork that they've done, and any other special items that they've enjoyed through out the year.  You could also write down certain things that your child remembers about the year.  Once your time capsule is filled, tape it up, and enjoy the memories in a few years.

Thank you for these great ideas... some are good for older kids as well! I plan on having my children do a time capsule this week, to look at next year. Fun!
