If you're just beginning the Letter of the Week activities, feel free to choose any letter to start with.  It's not necessary to go alphabetically, and may be more fun if you choose a letter that your child shows an interest in, a letter that goes a long with the season, or a theme that you're working on.

This week we're going to work on the Letter R.  There are a lot of fun hands-on activities that you can do for the Letter R week.  Choose some of the activities from the ideas below that best fit with your child's age and interests.

Some words that begin with the letter R include:  red, rose, raisin, road, ranch, rain, rabbit, rainbow, run, railroad, rhyme, rake, rhino, raccoon, robot, rock, river, and rectangle.

Menu:

Include some "R" foods in your breakfast, lunch, and snack time.  This could be:  raisins, rice or rice treats, raspberries, and Ritz crackers with red raspberry jam.

Math & Science:

- Collect items that begin with different letters.  Put these items in a bag or box and ask the children to go through the bag/box to find the items that begin with the letter "R".  You could also try a scavenger hunt, where the children are asked to search around the room or outside for things that begin with the letter "R".

- Go on a nature walk and collect rocks.  After you have collected multiple rocks, sit with the children and talk about the shapes of the rocks, and then help the children put the rocks in order from small to large or large to small.

- During snack time have the children practice counting their raisins and/or raspberries.

Arts & Crafts:

- Trace the children's hands using construction paper in colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple).  Cut the handprints out or ask the children to cut (if age appropriate).  Then glue or tape the handprints to the wall or window so that they look like a rainbow.

- Create a letter R book by gluing pictures of R items to paper and attaching the book using string, glue, or tape.  You could take photographs of items around the house or school, look through magazines with the children, or print clip art to use in your R book.

- Use the rocks from your nature walk and paint them red or the colors of the rainbow.

- Print or draw a large letter R or small letter r.  Have the children paint the bottom green and add red tissue paper to the top to make it look like a red rose.  You could also have the children paint the R in rainbow colors or turn the R into a robot.

Music & Movement:

- Draw or trace multiple rain drops on blue paper.  Cut them out and throw them in the air.  Sing "Raindrops are falling on my head", as you watch the rain drops fall.
