We're having a great time with our letter of the week activities.  This week we're playing with the letter O.

Some words that begin with the letter O are:  ox, one, oval, orange, octopus, otter, owl, onion, ornament, ostrich, ox, organic, oar, oak, oasis, octagon, October, outside, orbit, oven, object, office, officer, olives, olive oil, omelette's, open, orchard.

Menu:

- Oranges and orange juice

- Omelette's

- Oatmeal, oatmeal cookies, oatmeal muffins

- Olives and olive oil

- Onion rings

Math & Science:

- Put numbers on some plates.  Print or draw olives or oranges and ask the children to put the correct amount of olives or oranges on the plates.  See the slide show for an example.

- Print or draw some letter O animals:  octopus, owl, otter, and ostrich.  Have pictures of the ocean and a tree.  Have the children match the O animal with their habitat.

- Talk about words or show the children pictures of things that are opposites.  If you have pictures, have the children match the pictures that are opposite.  For an example, check out this opposites game.

- Cut out multiple oval and octagon shapes using felt or construction paper.  Have the children sort the shapes.  One pile for ovals and one for octagons.  If you're using a felt board, have the children put the ovals in one column, and the octagons in another.

- Put some orange sheets of paper on the floor.  Ask the children to look around the room and find items that are the color orange.  When they find an item, have them put it on the orange paper.

Arts & Crafts:

- Print coloring pages from First School for Letter O animals.

- Mix red and yellow paint together to show the children that red and yellow makes orange.  Have the children dip an empty ribbon roll, disk, or sponge (shaped like an O) in the orange paint and make O's on a piece of paper.

- O is for Ornament.  Paint some empty ribbon rolls, add glitter and/or other embellishments.  Add some ribbon and hang your ornament on the Christmas tree.

- Use some old DVD disks that may have scratches to make an octopus or owl face.  Cover with pieces of felt, add eyes, a nose, mouth, and/or legs.

- Make a letter O book.  Look through magazines and cut out pictures of items that begin with the letter O, animals that live at the Ocean, or things that you find outside.

Dramatic Play:

Setup your dramatic play area as an office with a play telephone, typewriter or toy laptop, manila file folders, pens/pencils (if it's safe for the children), note pads, and while you were out telephone message pads.

Field Trips:

Take the children to a local orchard.

Music and Movement:

Check out Everything Preschool for some Letter O songs.
