Beverly Hills, CA — The third film in the Trinity of the mythical “Church of Baseball” (Along with Bull Durham and The Natural.) will be presented by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrating the 20th anniversary of 1989 Best Picture nominee Field of Dreams on Wednesday, December 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The host will be Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan. The evening will feature a screening of the film from a new print from the Academy Film Archive and Universal. A cast-and-crew reunion will follow the screening featuring Kevin Costner and Timothy Busfield; Oscar-nominated writer Phil Alden Robinson, who also directed the movie; Oscar-nominated producers Charles Gordon and Lawrence Gordon; cinematographer John Lindley; and production designer Dennis Gassner.
Based on the book Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella, Field of Dreams is the story of Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) and his improbable cross-country journey in search of a connection with his long-dead father which culminates in a game of mythic proportions set in the midst of a cornfield starring a collection of the game’s all time greats. This magical film about the transformative power of baseball and a son’s love for his father earned Oscar® nominations for Music – Original Score (James Horner), Best Picture (L. Gordon, C. Gordon, producers), and Writing – Screenplay based on material from another medium (Robinson).
The most memorable quote from the film is the famous “Ode to the Game” majestically delivered by James Earl Jones: “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again”
