DVD Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

One of my favorite films of the year happened to be released in theaters on almost exactly my birthday.  No, I’m not talking about Inception or Toy Story 3.  Instead I am talking about the little studio film that could, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

The Edgar Wright film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is finally out on DVD and is such a blast.  The story of Scott Pilgrim on the surface isn’t a new one: boy loses a girl, boy meets a new girl but is indifferent about her, until boy meets a new girl, his one true love. Relationship stuff ensue.  The only twist is that with the boy meets the new girl who is his one true love, her baggage comes with her, in the form of seven exes, who are evil because, they want to kill the boy.  Yes, you heard correctly.  Scott Pilgrim has to face off all seven ex-boyfriends, (oops, sorry, I meant exes!) to win the heart of his girlfriend and possible one true love Ramona Flowers.  From the warped filmmaking minds who brought you the fantastic Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, comes this new romp into love stories with a unique twist.  And while you can look into the philosophical ideas behind it, such as that until you fight or ‘confront’ your past, you can’t move on and be happy, the film is just plain fun, ranging from it’s musical bollywood number during Evil Ex-Fight 1, to the wickedly sweet Bass Battle featuring former Superman himself Brandon Routh.

I remember the film coming out back in August and hearing how silly it looked, it looked like it was a bunch of annoying hipsters running around.  I’ll level with you, I’m not really a big fan of Micahel Cera, nor do I get most of the hipster humor, but Scott Pilgrim is the exception to both of these rules.  Whether you take away from it the video game or anime references, the music by Beck, Metric, and others or the love story or just the performances, the film, simply put, is a love letter to us geeks.

The Blu-Ray DVD is no exception. While I usually, like a normal consumer, try to get the most bang of my buck with Blu-Ray and DVDs, Universal hits a home run here.  Chock full of extras, ranging from how to play songs that Scott’s band plays, to tons of deleted scenes (including an alternate ending), four yes count ‘em, FOUR commentaries, and three documentaries and I have’t even begun to look for easter eggs if there are any.  The disc is so packed, it’s been two weeks and I still haven’t cracked everything out yet, only looking at it in pieces and then engulfed in the disc.

One of my favorite films of the year, and for years to come, is Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and the DVD extras alone make this the best 20-30 bucks you’ll spend on a DVD or Blu-Ray.  Yes, I’m in lesbians with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

The film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is available at your local DVD/Blu-Ray outlet store, and comes in two formats, DVD and Blu-Ray, with the Blu-Ray coming with the normal DVD format and a Digital Copy.
