Beija cachaca headquartered in Boston brings a taste of Brazil to the Northeast.

Cachaca (Ka-shasa) is the alcoholic spirit that is distilled and fermented from the juice of virgin sugar cane which sells 1.5 billion liters annually in Brazil. Caipirinha (Kai-per-inya) is the national drink of Brazil, which consists of lime and sugar muddled with cachaca. Cachaca is the 3rd most popular spirit in the world by volume and differs from rum because rum is made from sugar cane by-products like molasses.

With the allure of Brazilian supermodels it’s only natural to export the taste of paradise in liquid form after it has been hand pressed and harvested on small farms. Beija, which is derived from the verb “ to kiss”, in Portuguese, is the brain storm of locals Kevin Beardsley and Stephen Diforio. Together with friends, family, and some maxed out credit cards they have secured premium artisanal cachca from Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, which is then shipped to France to be bottled with exlusive distribution in the United States.

I was informed today that they have just secured exclusive distribution rights in the wholesale sector to New York and wish them well as they hopefully turn a profit with their passionate liquid offering. MS Walker of Somerville, MA distributes the brand in New England to premium on-premise trendy accounts.

Another sample drink with Cachaca from the Beija website:  www.beija.net
1 oz premium cashca
1 oz orange juice
¾ ounce cherry liquer
¾ ounce sweet vermouth

Shaker over ice, rattle, and pour….top it off with a cherry.

If you are not a purist, you can substitute vodka, rum, or the newest trend in Brazil; premium tequila, and still come up with an interesting drink.
