Dr. Oz 101: The health benefits of green tea

Throughout his writings and in numerous public appearances, Dr. Oz has extolled the virtues of green tea for health. But what is green tea and why is it good for us?

Green tea comes from the same plant as black tea, the Camellia sinensis. But rather than letting the tea leaves oxidize during processing (oxidation cause green leaves to turn black, just like an apple turns brown/black when exposed to oxygen), these leaves are steamed or pan-fired. This halts the fermentation process, locking in the natural goodness of the plant, at which point, the leaves are dried. Green tea has a lighter, more mild taste than black tea and is somewhat more astringent.

Because of this minimal processing, green tea has some of the highest content of polyphenols, which are beneficial chemicals with extremely potent antioxident properties. Compared to black tea which contains only about 10% polyphenols due to its more lengthy processing period, green tea has up to 40% polyphenols.

Green tea also provides a gentle energy boost while supporting focus and concentration. Though it only has one-third the caffeine of coffee, green tea has other natural chemicals that provide a more even energy boost, without the more dramatic ups and downs often associated with caffeine.

As detailed in his Anti-Aging Checklist sited by Oprah, Dr. Oz says that in order to get the many benefits of green tea, you should drink about four cups a day. However, don't drink it with milk, says Oz, as the casein in milk has been shown to inhibit the beneficial effects of tea.

Yes, green tea really is going to be as healthy as reputed for you. However, don't fall for the hype that it's so much better than black tea. Green, black, white, Oolong, Puer, all have their health benefits and they're all similar. If you really want the most for yourself, try mixing up between the different kinds of tea during the day.
