This morning at 4:04 a.m. a minor earthquake of M 4.4 rolled through Los Angeles, the epicenter to the southeast of the city at Passons Blvd. near the 605.
A earthquake typically needs to be a magnitude of 6.0 or higher to cause damage to urban areas, though there have been some slight damage reports from the California Highway Patrol that the southbound I-5 has buckled a bit causing a six-inch raise where work was already being performed.
People are concerned that it may be a foretaste of something bigger, but this may be due to all of the news lately of earthquakes worldwide.
Thousands of earthquakes occur daily as the earth's crust is in constant motion. The best thing is to have preventive measures in place, like an emergency plan for family and an earthquake survival kit that should include about three days worth of food, clothing and supplies like toiletries.
With that in mind, the residents of the Pacific Northwest should have preventive measures in place for that type of an emergency. Not only are earthquakes a likely possibility at any given time, but volcanic eruptions as well, due to the nature of the dangerously beautiful environment that surrounds Puget Sound.
Quake info for the Pacific Northwest can be found at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network website.
