The Expendables is exactly like what you think and hope an action movie with a cast like this would be. A testosterone fest! Guns? Yes! Cars? Yes! Explosions? Yes! Muscles? Martial arts? Knife play? A damsel in distress? Yes, yes, yes!
"The Expendables" has claimed the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row, and Colorado audiences agree! Directed by and starring Stallone its total is now $64.9 million according to the Associated Press. In it's 2nd week at the Douglas County theaters, The Expendables is still enjoying big crowds and happy audiences.
This weekend you either saw very happy men with their ladies either also action movie fans, or knowing it was the "guys turn" to pick the movie, or you saw very happy women with their less than enthusiastic guys in line for Eat Pray Love. Don't worry ladies, you'll be more entertained in this movie by some of the sexiest guys on the big screen all in one place for your viewing enjoyment if nothing else. Much more entertained than the male counterparts that were dragged to Eat Pray Love in the last two weeks.
A great Hollywood joke to have both of these completely opposite movies with the exact same release date.
If you think that these tough looking muscle bound guys aren't working hard during the filming of this movie, take a look at some of these behind the scenes clips, one of which lands Stallone in the hospital while he was shooting the fight scene with Steve Austin. The best dramatic scene in the movie came from a surprising source. About half way through the movie a poignant scene with Stallone and Mickey Rourke as he waxes poetic about a battle they shared in Somalia. Watch for it and see if you feel the same.
The most testosterone in the room at one time goes to the scene in the church where Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis stand in a circle flexing. If you are someone who just loves all three of these guys action movies, the moment was one of sheer joy. Getting to see Arnie post governorship was a blast and the one-liner in the scene is classic.
If you are going to this movie for deep plot, intense character development and poignant moments then you apparently haven't seen any of these action movie stars movies before. It is exactly the movie you think it's going to be and you will not be disappointed. Are there some corney moments in this film? Yes of course there are, but it still wins the examiner five star ranking for an action movie.
One thing The Expendables was able to deliver on was being able for each of these great tough guy actors to be able to be themselves, not upstage one another. Each of them had shining moments throughout the film.
Giselle Itie' is one of two ladies in the cast and is a virtually unknown actress to the American film going community. She turned in a convincing performance as Sandra, the local rebel.
Jet Li turned in a surprisingly tongue in cheek performance in this movie a bit uncharacteristic if you have followed his career of usual dark characters portraying a man of few words. He was quite enjoyable to watch bickering with Stallone.
Jean Claude Van Dam is rumored to have been asked to be part of the movie but turned it down because the plot had him loosing a fight to Jet Li. True or false? Who knows, but it's fun to speculate. Steven Segal was also reported to turn it down because he didn't appreciate the brand of humor? We haven't seen either of these two aging action stars in quite awhile and considering the two week long box office success of this movie, neither of them made a very smart career or business move.
The Expendables is playing everywhere as the trailer states. Here are some local big screens you can see the show. Be sure to take advantage of AMC Theaters before noon on the weekends and Monday through Thursday movie for only $5 bucks.

This looks AWESOME!!! Thanks for this review :)
I will see the movie for sure, and simply loved Eat, Pray, Love. Actually, the message was for everyone. Nice article.
Hey Jayne, I've read the book Eat Pray Love and plan on seeing the movie too, but I need to find a girlfriend to go with! The reviews for it aren't too good. Good to hear you loved it!
maybe I'll have to see this one...
I've been hoping for a chance to go see The Expendables. Having such a star-studded and high testosterone cast with Stallone, Statham, Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke promises to be tons of fun.
