Cat Days of Summer at the Denver Dumb Friends League Population Explosion

Denver Metro Colorado is in the midst of a cat and kitten population explosion. For the first time the Denver Dumb Friends League is waiving all adoption fee's for cats and kittens through August 31, 2010.

Presently there are 800 cats and kittens in the front range that the DDFL is housing. These beautiful animals need forever homes and the Dumb Friends League is committed to making this happen.

Both the Castle Rock and Denver Centers will be offering this special though August 31, 2010.

These and many more are just waiting for you to come and take them home and let them love you forever for your gift of life to them.

As is always the case at the Dumb Friends League, a cat's adoption fee includes:

  • a spay/neuter surgery,
  • preliminary vaccinations,
  • microchip implant and registration,
  • collar and identification tag,
  • a free initial office visit with a participating veterinarian.

The DDFL spends $300 for each homeless cat, including shelter, food and medical care.

We want to see cats in loving homes not in a shelter, which is why we are waiving adoption fees,” said Theresa Geary, vice president of operations. “The most important thing that we can do right now is place these cats into homes.”

For more information on the Cat Days of Summer adoption specials, visit ddfl.org or call (303) 751-5772, Ext. 6800.

We have seen about a 47 percent increase in cats and kittens that are brought to both of our shelters compared to this time last year,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO for the League. “There is an endless stream of homeless cats coming through our doors each day, and we need the community to help us find homes for them.

The DDFL is also looking for families that cannot adopt at this time but are willing to provide a foster home  for needy cats or dogs. Foster volunteers provide temporary care for an animal in their home—for a few days, weeks or months—until they are ready for adoption or space is available at the shelters. The Denver Dumb Friends League provides foster families with food and supplies, as well as veterinary care for pets as needed.

Two shelter locations: 2080 S. Quebec St. in Denver and the Buddy Center at 4556 Castleton Court in Castle Rock. For more information, visit ddfl.org.

I can't believe there are so many homeless cats! Maybe, with the waived fees, those people who want one but can't afford to pay for one, will now come in and get one. I know I would if my local shelter did something like this.

Adoption fees can be quite low and very high. This will allow an owner to get a pet that would not otherwise be able to purchase with high adoptions fees.

I wish the animal shelter luck in placing all their kittens and cats in forever homes -- does anyone know why the birthrate was so much higher this year than in years past?
