Send your car to the dogs

You may have seen the ads on TV. Donate your unwanted car to a worthy cause and receive a tax deduction. The organization that rings bells in front of stores is one of the largest to solicit your old auto. But did you know you could also donate it to a local animal shelter?

The Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS) accepts automobile donations. They will pick up your donated vehicle from your home. It’s tax deductible and another way to help the homeless animals.

How is the car valued?

"The car is valued by being sold at auction. The highest bidder purchases the car, and the auction company forwards the amount to us minus a towing fee. The donor then receives a thank you letter which can be used for income tax purposes with the amount listed that we have received," said Stephanie Keyes of the MCHS.

Check out the MCHS website for more information.

Note: You must call the MCHS to donate your car. At this time, email donations cannot be accepted.

Telephone: 240-773-5973

* Have your title ready and know the mileage of the car when you call.

What you need to provide when you donate a car:

Prove title to the vehicle, signed at the time of transfer, and given to our representative* at pickup

VIN # of the vehicle (on your title)
Mileage of the vehicle
Make, year, body type and color of the vehicle
Location of the vehicle
You must be able to guarantee that there are no liens on the vehicle and that you are the owner.

The Montgomery County Humane Society conducts their automobile donations in conjunction with Capital Auto Auction.

The Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS) in Rockville, Maryland, is a non-profit 501(c)3 animal welfare organization that has provided animal sheltering services for Montgomery County since 1958. Our funds to operate the Montgomery County Animal Shelter are provided under a grant from the Montgomery County government and from private donations.

Thanks for the plug, Michelle! We appreciate your coverage, and of course, the animals in our care are the real winners.

Great idea to emphasize Michelle. Donating a car can be a win/win situation. Thanks for the reminder.
