Gov Palin accused of approving poison gas for Alaska wolf hunts

The Defenders of Wildlife reported this week that Governor Sarah Palin has approved the use of poisonous gas to help cull the wolf population in Alaska.

"Palin’s Board of Game has approved the use of poison gas and deadly snares to kill defenseless wolf pups and their families in and around their dens, " stated the Defenders of Wildlife.

The group also noted that 66 wolves were killed, using helicopters, spotter planes, and aerial gunners this past week.

According to Anchorage News Daily:

The state [of Alaska] is offering incentives for people who kill wolves in an effort to boost Alaska's predator control program, which so far has failed to meet expected numbers. The program operating for five years, in five areas of the state, is designed to increase moose and caribou numbers by reducing the number of predators.

In February, DC Dogs reported that celebrity, Ashley Judd, is a supporter of the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and appeared with its president, Rodger Schlickeisen, on Larry King Live to talk about Eye On Palin -- a campaign about Governor Sarah Palin’s conservation record.

If the wolf hunts continue, Alaska will become the new New Jersey, where hunting deer was outlawed years ago. There, they've just had to re-institute controlled culling of the deer herd, because the only predator that deer have in the Garden State is cars. Sure, Alaska is a big state, but by tipping the ecological scales in favor of the moose and caribou, eventually they will become as much of a nuisance and danger as the deer in New Jersey are.

Predators belong in the population, to control the herds and help to keep them healthy. Those who believe otherwise are simply brainwashed by Mother Goose and her Big Bad Wolf fiction. There's nothing bad about a wolf...they belong in the ecosystem and should be allowed to live in peace.

I couldn't have expressed my view any better than Sandy. She's right on about the predators amid our population. I find it cruel to shoot any animal from a plane. And the poison intended for the wolves? Who's to say it doesn't get dispersed among other wild animals that are not the target. This is one erroneous government decision that needs to be stopped immediately.

I'm not sure poison from above is really the best way to deal with the problem either way. Great article!

Sarah Palin seems to be all for controlling all animal population except for humans. She also wants to turn down education money for special needs children like her own in Alaska. She could have taken the time off from politicking to study American history and international relations to prepare for a presidential run in 2012. Instead she's going to fail as miserably in 2012 as she did in 2008.

Thank God she's not the vice president now! She would have been another Dick Cheney and God knows we don't need another one of those.

Clearly the phrase 'poison gas' is the attention getting part of this story. Can you substantiate this? The Defender's of Wildlife site doesn't mention it, nor does the Governors Page. I can't see how this would even work, so I suspect unsubstantiated rumor rather than an actual program.

William-Thank you for the comment. My information comes directly from Defenders of Wildlife president Roger Schlickeisen. Gov. Palin's office has not commented as of posting.

There has to be a better way than that, right? (Can animals be relocated? Then none would die, maybe?)

    Uggggggh Palin

Yes all you ill informed emoticons know better about how to manage predators and wildlife than the scientists and managers of Alaska. Sandy is spot on - predators belong in the population and are a necessary part of the ecosystem.
"Culling" predators so there are more moose and caribou to hunt (probably from the air) is ridiculous. And now gassing pups??!! Even more insane. But then look at the idiot who made the decision.

Let's put the politics aside (difficult, I know) & look at Sandy's comment - Nature has a balanced ecosystem when people don't interfere. Poisoning wolves is not a solution. Back to politics - most of the anti-wolf people are ranchers who disapprove of wolves "biting" into their profits (my opinion, no citation). What is the fate of this magnificent animal worth in dollars?

as mentioned before, where is the statement of using posion gas substanciated? I am pretty much opposed to the killing of any large predator, unless necessary (self defense or problem cases-farm kills on private land). This type of a statement could be political postureing. However it is so extreme that it has very limited appeal.

Did She really say this? If so, it sounds like political postureing. She could be speaking in code; ie christianity- dominion over living things. If so it is such an extreme position that I doubt it would have much appeal. I live in a rural area and am excited to see these large predators return. I am opposed to the killing of large predators unless necessary (self defense or farm kills-on private property).

Um . . . Hunting deer in NJ was not outlawed. Please look up things instead of making them up. ;<
Nature can take care of itself.
Her heart's in the right place, but she has blinded herself to the truth. The only way to want to destroy these wonderful animals is to make yourself beleive they are bloodthristy monsters.

Sarah Palin says that she supports family. Yet she is destroying the family of the wolves. She is thinking up every brutal way possible to kill the wolves and create calamitous conclusions for them. It is well documented that it is near impossible to restore wild life at the rate she is going with this. Unless more people step in to help! Palin has so much awful karma to pay for for her wrong doings. God help her to wake up and see the horrible intentions she has brought up against nature.
