2009 Hambone Awards: 12 most bizarre pet accidents

Crawford, the Brittany spaniel of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, ate a bra and its gel inserts. The inserts proved mildly toxic to Crawford. Fortunately, the bra passed in about a week.

And it only gets better from there. Veterinary Pet Insurance Co (VPI) received many astonishing pet health insurance claims last year. They collected the most unusual pet claims from each month.

Jean Pierre the French bulldog in Ontario, California, presented with a lump on his side that was initially thought to be a bug bite or cancerous growth. An exploratory surgery revealed the lump was actually a migrating corndog stick.

You can vote for the most bizarre claim of the year. The pet with the claim voted most unusual will receive VPI's first Hambone Award, named in honor of a VPI-insured dog that got stuck in a refrigerator and ate an entire Thanksgiving ham while waiting to be found.

There are many more odd claims. Click HERE  to read about the dog with a pacifier eating fetish and the dog that inhaled a fish hook. All have happy endings.

Voting for the VPI Hambone Award ends Sept. 14, 2009.

Dog people are not surprised by these stories. If you have one, please drop the DC Dogs Examiner a line.

You gotta love the story about the dog eating an entire ham. And you're right about everyone having their share of stories. Just thinking about some of mine put a smile on my face, something I can always count on after reading one of your pieces Michelle.

    Thanks!

@Lew--- Yes, the Hambone story made me hyperventilate. Can't you see the expression on the peoples' and dog's faces when the fridge door was opened?
@Karen--LOL. Maybe dogs will get it before people do.

All my cat does is make sure he's on the carpet and not the tile when he gets sick. Not so cute or funny. But you are so right about needing to keep an eye out for them and their lack of good sense. Thanks for the great stories. It's always a pleasure to read your work.

Ellie May has a ball point pen fetish, or maybe it is ink she likes?!?! She found rat poison once and had her stomach pumped and got vit K for a month. She ate a dead beaver once, maggots and all, the vet said he had never seen anything so bad in his career! She is trouble on big basset hound feet!

I just read about a dog getting his tongue caught in a paper shredder that was set to Auto. I immediately pulled the plug out on mine since it doesn't have an off switch and one of the dogs that comes to stay with me likes to sit under my desk.

@ Carolyn. OMG that is horrible! Thanks for the tip. Dogs get themselves in some hairy situations!
