Money saving tips for dog owners

Articles and news stories offering cost-cutting tips are popping up faster than the buzz about the latest style craze. More than just a fad, however, saving money has become a necessity for many.

As you comb through the budget for places to cut back on expenses, your eyes eventually fall on the costs of caring for Fido. From dog food to grooming to health care, our four-legged family members certainly add their share to the family bills.

But a little creativity can go a long way in making positive changes to the furry part of your budget. Here are a few tips to help you save money on dog care.

  • Buy pet food in bulk. Surf the Internet to find coupons and deals on the kibble of your canine’s choice. If you feed your dog a raw diet, check out Yahoo Groups to find a bulk buying group in your area.

  • Consider health insurance for your dog. Policies vary in cost and coverage, but carrying insurance can save you a lot of money on veterinary care throughout the life of your dog.

  • Search for low-cost options for routine vet care. Some clinics offer bargain-priced check-ups and spay/neuter surgeries. Just make sure you have a recommendation from a trusted, knowledgeable friend or veterinary professional.

  • Do your own grooming. Brushing, trimming and bathing your pup yourself can save money for more necessary items.

  • Limit vaccinations. If you vaccinate your pup annually, now’s the time to read up on the dangers of over-vaccination. In fact, most vet schools are now teaching that vaccinating every three years is plenty and many holistic experts feel that puppy shots may offer life-time coverage.

  • Talk to your veterinarian if you’re struggling with your vet bills. Many clinics are willing to set up payment plans and some even have donated funds set aside to help pet owners in need.

  • Check with your dog’s breed organization. Some national clubs have funds available to assist with expenses.

  • Search for charities that offer help for pet owners. The Humane Society of the United States, for example, has a page on its website dedicated to help you find financial assistance and a list of money-saving tips for animal lovers.

Remember that, expenses aside, your dog is actually helping you through this difficult time. Just living with, walking and petting a dog can lower blood pressure and alleviate stress, making Fido your personal, in-house, furry physician. Cheaper than therapy, right?!
