In these tough economic times, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for people to make monetary donations to shelters and rescue organizations. Sadly, these groups are not seeing a reduction in the number of animals in need and the resources available to care for them are limited. Even if you can’t make a financial contribution to one of our local animal groups, you can still show your support by volunteering a few hours of your time.
One of our best known local organizations, the Sacramento SPCA, has numerous volunteer opportunities available. There are jobs for every personality type and interest. Volunteer positions range from clerical assistance to helping with events to working directly with the animals. Training and guidance are offered every step of the way. The staff at the Sacramento SPCA strives to give each volunteer tasks that they are interested in and enjoy. In fact, the Sacramento SPCA was recently named “Best Place to Volunteer” by Sacramento magazine and Sacramento News and Review readers. The organization received this honor from Sacramento magazine in 2005, 2006 and 2007 as well.
More than 1,300 volunteers donate their time to the Sacramento SPCA. To help decide if volunteering is right for you, attend a new volunteer orientation at Gracie’s Adoption Center. Orientation dates are listed on the Sacramento SPCA’s online calendar. A time commitment of eight hours a month for twelve months is requested. Volunteers must be 18 years of age. For those that are under 18 but still want to be a part of the SPCA’s efforts, there are youth group activities and community service projects that include tours, classroom visits and Camp Kindness, which is held in the summer.
