Safe Dog Handbook
Is it possible to have a dog more accident-prone than Marley (from the famous book and movie Marley and Me)? Melanie Monteiro, author of the recently published “Safe Dog Handbook” and Sisters, Ore. resident says absolutely. Her yellow Lab Taiga was the inspiration for her comprehensive life-saving guide for new puppy parents and experienced dog owners. According to Melanie, Taiga has a nose for trouble.
When I asked Melanie why she decided to write this guidebook, she talked about how Taiga was the poster child for canine emergencies. He swallowed a coin, nipped at bees and ate from a poisonous Azalea plant in her yard. After spending a lot of time at local vet emergency hospitals her husband told her she should write a book. “I became a real geek about dog safety,” said Monteiro. “People need to learn about all the hazards and how to spot things before they happen.”
With so many things for dog owners to know, Melanie was kind enough to share the most important, high-level dog owner tips that I could share with my readers:
Tip one: Dog owners should program the numbers of their vet, Animal Emergency Hospital and poison hotline in their cell phone, Iphone or Blackberry immediately. If an emergency arises, call ahead to let them know you’re coming - and what happened/you think the issue is in case they need to make special arrangements before treating your dog.
Tip two: Know basic first aid and have a pet first aid kit at home. Be prepared to act/react - it could make a big, big difference.
Tip three: Learn how to give your dog CPR and learn how to take your dog’s pulse. Watch Melanie’s CPR tips by visiting this You Tube clip.
What’s great about “The Safe Dog Handbook” are the digestible tips found throughout. The guidebook includes categories that range from dog-proofing basics to safe food treats.
