Dogs 101: Where can I adopt a dog in Portland?

Indigo Rescue's Indigo Ranch in Vernonia, OR

It's no wonder that Portland is one of the most dog friendly cities - there are so many rescue groups and shelters to mention in this story. Included are Portland dog rescue organizations but if you're interested in Washington, Salem or other Oregon based shelters (or cat rescue groups) I can point you in the right direction. Shoot me an email or post a comment.  Below is a list and I've highlighted a handful of the smaller groups where you can adopt a dog:

  • Pixie Project - The Pixie Project is dedicated to providing animal adoption in a nurturing environment and affording access to spay and neuter services for everyone. As an animal adoption center and non-profit pet supply store, The Pixie Project, is able to donate 100% of the profits generated by the sale of their healthy pet products to animal rescue, adoption and low-income spay and neuter services. The Pixie Project is known as being unique and having a fresh approach to rescue. http://www.pixieproject.org/
  • Animal Aid - Animal Aid, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose basic premise is to relieve and prevent the suffering or death of non-human friends from accident, starvation or disease. In addition to providing adoption services, they also have the Jack Hurd Medical Loan Fund (named in honor of their founder) which provides assistance to domestic pets. They budget $100,000 yearly to accomplish this and assist about 1000 pets a year through this program. http://www.animalaidpdx.org/
  • Indigo Rescue and OCU at Indigo Ranch - a local organization that launches and maintains programs that assist county animal shelters. Indigo Rescue was founded in 1998. OCU at Indigo Rescue is a vacation getaway for dogs in a beautiful country setting in Vernonia. And the key angle is all profits from OCU at Indigo Ranch will fund the continued rescue work already underway. They clearly have thought this through! http://www.indigorescue.org/
  • Oregon Dog Rescue - Oregon Dog Rescue was formed by two dedicated women with a combined 12 years of rescue experience. The group has been involved in rehabilitating dogs from large confiscations in Oregon and refugees from hurricane Katrina. http://www.oregondogrescue.org/about/about.htm
  • Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals - Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (OFOSA) is an all volunteer nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the living conditions and adoptability of shelter animals. The agency provides support to shelters by fund-raising for them as well as adopting pets out. In addition, they provide community services such as the senior smiles program, where senior citizens are aided if they can no longer care for their pets. http://www.ofosa.org/
