It’s hard not to be impressed by the artistry of Poochie Kingdom. With their sleek booth at Pet Fashion Week emanating a medieval-gothic vibe, the selection of coats arranged on black shelving resembled a funky museum exhibition in canine costume design, and my first reaction was a simple “wow.”
“We are specialized in haute couture luxury raincoats for the decadent pooch catering to dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes and Mastiffs on a global basis,” says Tara Brown, designer and co-founder. Their clothes are designed, handmade, and manufactured in Montreal, but can be found at a number of New York sites (including Bitch New York). Working with some of the most beautiful fabrics I’ve seen, including polyurethane, denim, velveteen, raw silk, and faux fur, they’ve added hand-painted buttons, Swarovski crystals, black tear-drop trimming, and other embellishments that have to be seen to be appreciated.
The initial inspiration for the company came from their family dog, Marley, a Golden Retriever. He had a life-long skin condition that was exacerbated by harsh weather conditions. When their veterinarian suggested holistic food and a raincoat, they went shopping—but Tara couldn’t find anything that suited her fashion sense. They did buy Marley a coat (albeit not a fashion-forward one), and it helped relieve his discomfort. It also caused Tara to pursue designing and manufacturing her own raincoat collection.

The collection has expanded to include haute couture water resistant luxury blankets and beds and a line of extravagant winter coats lined with double-plush fleece. You’ll also find works of art like the Limited Edition Brown Brushed Leather Coat, a brown brushed-leather coat with belt, pleated cape, oriental collar, hand-embellished Swarovski crystal, unique patches, and rust colored fringe trim.
These coats are ideal for the New York City canine fashion plate. Your pooch will be red-carpet ready even when she’s only strutting her stuff in your local dog park!
