Death,desperation and struggle - what I see

Editorial

I see more and more dogs surrendered to shelters because of a down economy.

I see fewer adoptions because of the same economy.

I see rescues bursting at the seams as they try to take in society's cast-offs.

I see rescuers who are desperate.

I see rescuers who take in too many because they are unable to say no.

I see people who beg and plead for dogs to be saved from death row, only to fall silent once those animals are "safe" within a rescue.

Again, I see rescues who are desperate. Desperate because they stepped up to help and then those who were pleading disappear.

I see a careless society.

I see a disposable society.

I see innocent dogs dying by the thousands.

I see page after page of urgent dogs.

I see rescues being criticized for not doing enough - I see rescues condemned when they refuse to take a dog.

I see rescues faulted for not networking hard enough.

I see rescues denounced when they grow weary and ask for help.

I see a society who does not respond to a simple request for assistance - a society that becomes outraged if a rescue threatens to place dogs in their care back in a shelter or worse.

I see networkers who network, but do not volunteer with a rescue - who do not know how enormous their burden is.

I see rescuers who have given up their own life for the sake of the dogs in their care.

Individuals who no longer travel, go out to eat, or have fun - because they no longer have the time or the money.

I see a society who expects perfection - with too many individuals who will only adopt a purebred "perfect" dog.

I see those same people turn their dogs over to a shelter or rescue when the dogs fall short of some perceived "perfection".

I see a sad cycle of gathering and disposal - saving and shuffling.

What I see makes me weary and sad.
