Seattle, WA - Seattle residents have the opportunity to participate in the first ever 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! Walk for Cancer on November 7, 2010. The walk is part of a national effort organized by 2 Million dogs 2 Miles, a non-profit organization that came to fruition after dog owner, Luke Robinson, lost his beloved companion, Malcolm, to metastatic bone cancer in 2006.
In 2008, Robinson, along with 2 of his dogs, walked 2000 miles, from Austin to Boston, after losing Malcolm - fulfilling a promise to his beloved companion to raise awareness of canine cancer, one mile, one city, one person at a time. His journey took him two years to complete.
Funds raised by walks across the nation will be used for research into comparative onocology. What is comparative oncology? It is the study of naturally occurring cancers in animals, by clinical veterinary oncologists, to better understand and treat cancer in humans.
Sadly, nobody is excempt from cancer. Naturally occurring cancer can touch any person - any animal. There are certain breeds of dogs that tend to to be afflicted with cancer more than others. Top breeds include:
- Golden Retrievers
- Boxers
- English Bulldog
- Cocker spaniels
- Rottweilers
- Great Pyrenees
Funds raised will be directed to preeminent cancer research institutions to help further their work in comparative oncology.
Tiny Growl, a Seattle based company, is participating in the upcoming Seattle walk. Tiny Growl will be donating a portion of their proceeds from the sale of each ScooPup Pocket towards the 2 Million Dogs campaign. Take a peek at the company's blog here.
