Pet insurance can be your dog's best friend

While deciding what dog food to buy or what toy Fido will like best, why not consider pet health insurance?

These days, when politicians are fighting about people health insurance, pet health insurance is affordable and fairly easy to get. Some employers are even offering it! Insurance companies will even deduct it from your checking account each month if you choose.

Yet there are those who would argue that by the time you pay the premiums, if an illness occurs, you’ve already paid more into the plan than it would cost for the surgery etc. But think about this, would you really want to shell out thousands of dollars without insurance?

There are many different companies and plans to choose from and unlike people health insurance, it’s pretty easy to figure out.

When you first get your new companion, you may think you’ll wait until she was about a year old to pay a premium. Surprisingly, you can insure your pet right away and not just dogs. Today Pet healthcare insurers cover dogs, cats, birds and even exotic pets such as rabbits, turtles, ferrets and many more species (check with your provider).

You’ll be pleasantly surprised that you can pay under $17 a month and have peace of mind. There are “Accident/. Illness Only” plans, but you can choose from a whole array of coverage.

Some plans even offer teeth cleaning. As with humans, pet teeth cleaning is just as important. Some pet health insurance plans cover things like acupuncture and Chiropractic Therapy. One even covers Burial or Cremation.

Most companies offer 80% reimbursement after deductable.

Some things to look for when choosing a pet health insurance carrier:

  • Can I choose my own vet? Make sure you can use your own vet and not have to choose from their network.

  • Who decides the treatment of your pet?  Make sure you and your vet are the decision makers in your pet’s treatment.

  • What does the policy cover? Make sure illness and accidents are covered. You can always choose to add on from there.
