This is a great 2-mile walk that starts at the Kings Contrivance village center in Columbia, follows the Middle Patuxent River, and is just beautiful!
The path is paved and shaded with several small playgrounds for rest stops. Plus there are several places that water-loving dogs will not be able to resist--especially on a hot day. One is actually like a small sandy beach. There is also a pond along the way where we may see a great blue heron and turtles.
Then, when the walk is over, you can head up to the KC village center courtyard where you can get ice cream and other cold treats at
Rita's Ice , which has 4 walk-up windows for ordering with your pooch in tow, and is open from March through November. Or, you could head into the Starbuck's at the Harris Teeter. Or, the Bagel Bin. Or the Subway, Italian restaurant, Chinese restaurant, Michael's Pub, or heck . . . the liquor store! There's something for everyone here! Tables and umbrellas are set up in the courtyard during the warmer seasons, but there is always seating on the benches around the courtyard.
The Walk:
We recommend parking behind the
Amherst House (shown in the picture below). You'll avoid all the Harris Teeter traffic and have easy access to the beginning of the walk.
- Look for the paved pathway to the right of Amherst House and follow it away from the village center and across the open grassy area.
- At the end of this stretch, you’ll arrive at Sweet Hours Way, a relatively quiet street
and the only one you’ll cross on this walk.
- Turn left and walk downhill about 500 yards, and look for the beginning of the pathway across the street.
- Start walking along the path and enjoy. You can go for a good mile down this paved trail, which follows the Middle Patuxent River most of the way. You’ll find a number of small playgrounds along the way to rest. And if your dog loves water, he’ll beg you to explore some of the swimming opportunities along the way.
Remember, this is all Howard County land and subject to leash laws and, of course, poop pick-up rules.
This is a favorite walk for
Columbia Dogs-on-the-Go, so if you’d like to wait and walk it with a group, please check the CDOG website and calendar for upcoming walks.
