Pit bull attacks local off-duty cop and his dog

The Baltimore Sun reports an off-duty cop and his dog were attacked by a pit bull on Sunday May 9, 2010.  Ellicott City resident and off-duty cop, Isaiah Harrison, was taking an afternoon walk with his 17-month old Yorkie/Poodle mix when they were charged by the loose dog.

Attempting to protect his puppy, Harrison picked up his dog.  The pit bull bit his hand, causing him to drop his dog.  The pit bull then attacked the terrier.  Harrison is quoted as saying "The owner finally came and he grabbed the dog's collar...He finally got his dog loose, but it was too late then. My dog was already dying. It happened so quick."

After taking the Yorkiepoo to the vet, Harrison and his wife learned their dog was paralyzed.  The couple decided it was best to euthanize their puppy to end his suffering.

Isaiah Harrison was taken to the hospital where he received 45 stitches to the hand that will also require surgery and physical therapy.  He is concerned that the injury will negatively impact his career as a federal police officer.

Police have not identified the pit bull's owner who willingly surrendered the dog to the county's Animal Control Division.  After a 10-day quarantine and completion of rabies tests, the pit bull will be euthanized.

Animal Control administrator Deborah Baracco advises dog owners try to remain calm if attacked to avoid further antagonizing the attacking dog.  She further recommends protecting yourself first and then get help for your dog.

"The owner finally came and he grabbed the dog's collar..."
That's all that needs to be said. The owner of the pit bull was not in control of the dog. Too bad for everyone involved, but the owner of the pit bull should have been more cautious and alert. Small dogs like a Yorkie/Poodle puppy can activate the prey instinct in a pit bull (like squirrels or other small animals do) and most responsible owners are aware of that and take extra precaution. Was the pit bull even on a leash? It doesn't sound like it from the story. Irresponsible owners give us all a bad name!
