Jill Rosen of the Baltimore Sun, reports there is a mystery afoot at Baltimore’s Scarlett Place condominiums. Someone is neglecting to pick up his or her dog’s poop inside the building.

The Inner Harbor residents have been plagued with finding stinky piles in common areas, hallways and even elevators. Needless to say, owners of the upscale condos are fed up with the, literal, mess.

The Scarlett Place condo board is considering a controversial plan to put a stop to this problem. Rosen writes “Under the proposal, every dog at Scarlett Place and guest dogs would be swabbed for a DNA sample — owners would then have to pay $50 each to cover the test and supplies. Dog owners would also pay an extra $10 per month per dog to cover the cost of having the building's staff scoop poop and send it to a lab. Feces, like saliva, contains tell-tale DNA.” According to supporters, this plan would be less expensive and time-consuming than video surveillance.

Staff members, as well as residents, are divided on the idea. Employees do not relish the idea of having to continue picking up excrement and then having to handle it to mail off to a lab. Residents feel testing would be too “big brother” and potentially faulty.
