One of the many participants in the Pittie Pride walk hosted by Love A Bull.
Today many people from the Austin area joined together to walk across downtown Austin and show their pride and support for one of the most targeted breeds in America: the Pit Bull.
Although Pit Bulls have a bad reputation and are most well known for being involved in dog fighting, especially the recent Michael Vick incident, there was absolutely no hint of that at today's prideful event. Instead, all around you would have found smiling faces of both dogs and owners as people with a common goal came together to show their support for the breed.
Love A Bull's goal is to educate the public about this wonderful breed, promote responsible ownership, and dispell the myths associated with Pit Bulls. Contrary to popular belief, Pit Bulls actually make wonderful family companions and can be some of the most docile and lovable (no pun intended) of all dog breeds. However, Pit Bulls are being euthanized at alarming rates and are particularly vulnerable to breed specific legislation due to their reoccuring presence in the news for being a part of such horrific incidents of human cruelty as the Michael Vick dog fighting ring. However, all across the nation you will also find those who will stand up against such inhumanities and rally together to support the dogs that cannot win this battle for themselves, and that is what today's event was all about.
The walk began at CIty Hall Plaza near the 2nd Street District and ended at Joe's on South Congress where everyone involved, including the four-legged participants, took a change to get something cool to drink and learn a little more about everyone involved. After some caffiene and a little live music, participants made their way back to the start of the walk stopping here and there to let other Austinites enjoy their pets as much as they do. Even Austin Pets Alive! made it out to the event with some special dogs looking to find a home of their own.
This isn't the only Pittie inspired event that Love A Bull has up their sleeves, though. Check out some of their upcoming events below in which all dogs, not just Pit Bulls, are welcome to attend!
