Today is another in a series of articles about service dogs, though this one has a twist: these are trained service dogs who work exclusively with service men and women returning from combat zones.
Deanne Goodman files a report on Freedom Dogs, an organization which uses dogs to assist soldiers returning from battle with physical as well as mental battle scars. Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, was first recognized as a fairly common syndrome after thousands of Viet Nam vets returned home with it. Now, as so many American military men and women are returning from the middle east with PTSD, Freedom Dogs is looking to expand to a nationwide organization, and is actively seeking and training volunteers, trainers and dogs all across the country.
These dogs are expensive to raise and train, but Freedom Dogs understands that our military heroes have already given enough. There is no charge to them for the service dog they receive - Freedom Dogs pays all the costs from the donations received from the public. With more wounded men and women returning daily, there's a great need for these dogs to provide physical and mental support. Especially in tough economic times, non-profits struggle to make ends meet, and Freedom Dogs is no exception. Donate your time, your money or both to help this amazing group.
