Chicken jerky suspected in dog illnesses and death

The Food and Drug Administration continues to receive complaints about illnesses tied to chicken jerky treats, and has continued the caution issued in the fall of 2007.

The treats are called chicken jerky, chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats, and are imported to the US from China and distributed under many different brand names.  The FDA advisory warns consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken products form China to watch their dogs closely for any or all of the following symptoms, which can occur within hours to days of consumption:

decreased appetite
decreased activity
vomiting
diarrhea, sometimes with blood
increased water consumption and urination

Owners should consult their veterinarians if the signs are severe or persist more than 24 hours.  Most commonly, dogs exhibiting symptoms are found to have some degree of kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome.  Most dogs recover with good vet treatment, but some reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died.

The safest thing to do is to avoid all chicken products originating from China until the problem is found and solved.  Meanwhile, the recipe for an easy-to-make treat for your dog is below, for your "safe treating" pleasure.  Your dog will thank you for these!

Tuna and Salmon Fudge

2 6-oz cans Tuna OR 1 14 oz can Salmon - do not drain
1 1/2 cups flour
1 T dried parsley flakes
2 eggs
grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Process tuna, parsley and eggs in food processor or blender or mix in a bowl. Add flour and mix to a brownie-like consistency. Spread into a 9x9-inch greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes. When the brownies are done, they will have a putty-like texture and the edges will pull away from the sides of the pan. Cut into squares and freeze.

I sent this to my mom. She had some chicken jerky stuff not too long ago. Also, thanks for the recipe. I might serve it as hors d'oeuvres at my next party. :) Seriously, though the pups will go nuts!
