Atlanta's super events for a super weekend

A young girl is the center of attention at the show.

The dog shows continue Saturday and Sunday at the Atlanta Expo Center South in Jonesboro. This is indoor family fun…all of the details are here and photos from Friday’s dog show are in the slide show below.

If you’re looking for a big dog to share the couch with you for Sunday’s big game, then Hall County Humane Society might just have your new best friend. There will be a Big Dog adoption at the Flowery Branch PetSmart on Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. The Flowery Branch PetSmart is 5873 Spout Springs Road, Flowery Branch, GA 30542.

If you’re looking for football-themed tv with a dog twist, don’t forget to tune in to Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl V Sunday afternoon at 3. You’ll see adorable adoptable puppies romping through games and challenges in an arena setting. The National Anthem will be sung by an African Grey parrot named Pepper, and the Bissell Kitty Halftime Show will be featured, hopefully without a cats vs. dogs segment!

Looking for a good read during the cold months? Look no further than the New York Times best-sellers lists…hardcover nonfiction’s top 15 includes “Animals Make Us Human” by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson, a book about how looking out for the emotions in our animals makes us better people. The leader of the pack in paperback non-fiction is “Marley and Me” by John Grogan, enjoying a resurgence of popularity due to the release of the movie made from it.

For your Advance Planning…

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary representatives will be in town this coming Tuesday to help local rescuers maximize adoptions and network with other Best Friends representatives from Georgia. The event is at the Central Library Tuesday afternoon and evening. To RSVP or for more information, email Samantha Robson or call (435) 689-1239.

Andre Mailliez, the local PetTech Pet First Aid, CPR and Care Instructor, will be teaching Pet First Aid, CPR and Care at a fund raising event for the Humane Society of Hall County on Saturday, 2/7. The class is designed for pet owners, pet care professionals, and pet rescue professionals and is a mix of fast-paced interactive lecture with demonstrations and hands-on learning. There is no 911 for pet emergencies, so it’s up to the owners to know what to do. According to the American Animal Hospital Association 1 out of 4 more pets would survive, if just one pet first aid technique was applied prior to getting emergency veterinary care. For every paid attendance the HSHC will be getting a $20.00 donation, so this is also a good fund raiser for the group.

And Saturday night, Happy Tails Pet Therapy is hosting a party at Villa Christina. Information on Warm Hearts and Cold Noses is here.

Those dogs in the slideshow look very well-behaved. My well-behaved pups are napping on the sofa right now. There are best behaved when they are asleep. :)
