Is a dog now a victim of the salmonella outbreak?
Salmonella is suspected in the death of an elderly dog here in Georgia, as the search continues for just how the intestinal bacteria got into peanut products from a Georgia processing plant.
Atlantan Bert Kanist is heartbroken and just wants answers. He fears he poisoned his dog with Austin brand peanut butter crackers two days before they were recalled.
Like some other pet owners, he gave his dogs human food as treats, and his dog Ozzie loved peanut butter crackers. He ate two packages of them, became ill the next day, and succumbed to the illness within 24 hours. Mr. Kanist's other dog, Snickers, didn't eat any of the peanut butter crackers, and seems fine except she's missing her buddy.
Now Mr. Kanist reports that he's getting the run-around from both government agencies and from Kellogs, the owner of Austin brands. Because his dog's body was cremated, a necropsy can't be performed, but testing for the presence of salmonella is being done on peanut butter crackers from the same case as the one the suspect crackers were from.

What a sad story. Thanks for keeping this on our radar, so to speak.
Oh, how very sad. The owner must feel terrible and be angry, irritated, and frustrated at the same time. I'm sure the owner is going to meet road blocks on this. So many did with the melamine incidents. Thanks for the report.
We had to put our 10 yr old male rott to sleep, Dec. 1st 2008. He got very sick and nothing helped. He loved Ausstin Peanut Butter crackers and ate a lot of them, our Female loved them also but she didn't ate as many when he was here, She got really sick the end of Dec 08 took her to the vet, they thought she had liver failure, after 3 days on IV's and 700.00 well spent, she is home and we are very thankful. I do believe with all my heart all of this happened because of those peanut butter crackers,
Kay, I am so sorry to hear that you lost your beloved Rottweiler, and so glad that at least you could save one of your two. You might find this page interesting atlanta.injuryboard.com/tag/Salmonella+poisoning
Hope all continues to be well with your girlie-Rottie, Kay...thanks for reading and commenting.
