Northeast supermarket chain Wegmans and Syracuse meteorologist Wayne Mahar team up on Saturday, August 7, for the first annual Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation (PMAWF) Canine Carnival. Wegmans Good Dog Park in Liverpool is the site of the Canine Carnival, with free admission rain or shine from 10am to 2pm.
According to Mahar's blog and recent news releases for the event, the Canine Carnival will feature around 40 vendors of animal products and services, music, games, prizes, an auction, face painting, balloons and VIP and celebrity dog walkers. Shelters and rescue groups will showcase animals available for adoption at the event. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Mahar invites the public to bring their dogs, on leash, and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Wegmans Good Dog Park.
Syracuse Obedience Training Club (SOTC) is one of the groups who will be demonstrating dog activities at the Canine Carnival. Members with several different breeds of dogs will show off obedience, agility, rally and pet therapy skills. At 10:30am and 12:30pm, SOTC demonstrates an AKC Canine Good Citizen test for the public.
The Canine Carnival raises funds for the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation (PMAWF). PMAWF raises money and then, according to the website statements, distributes the donations to “not-for-profit organizations that work as advocates for the welfare of animals.” In its first two years, the foundation donated funds to the Central New York SPCA, Spay and Neuter Syracuse (SANS) and other local groups. Mahar started the foundation in 2008 to honor his mother after she passed away. “She loved animals,” Mahar told syracuse.com reporter Sarah Moses. “I do, too.”
Wegmans, the primary sponsor for the Canine Carnival, is celebrating the Wegmans Good Dog Park’s 10th anniversary. Mahar told Moses, “It’s going to be a fun time for anyone who loves animals.” Mahar will be there with his two Havanese. They are small, sturdy long-coated dogs and the breed is the national dog of Cuba, according to information breed information on the American Kennel Club website. Doppler the Weather Cat will also have his own booth, according to Mahar.
Mahar hopes to make the free Canine Carnival an annual event. Activities are scheduled from 10am to 2pm, and will run rain or shine. In addition to parking available at the Wegmans Good Dog Park Cold Springs Rd. (Rt. 370) entrance, more parking will be available for Canine Carnival participants at Willow Bay. Shuttles will bring people and their pets to the dog park.
