Syracuse Dog Training received information last night from a Hartz Mountain representative confirming that consumers who have purchased a package of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs with the lot code BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519 recalled on September 3 should not return the actual package to stores for refunds.

According to Anne Isenhower, Senior VP Media Relations, GolinHarris New York, speaking on behalf of Hartz Mountain: "Consumers should dispose of the product in a way that pets can’t get to them." Isenhower reiterated that "consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 at any time with any questions." Further information about the recall is included in the Hartz Mountain press release distributed on September 3 and available on the FDA.gov website.

In an email received last night, Isenhower confirmed that "the Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs product was distributed nationally, in all 50 states." Isenhower continued that "Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. The best way to know if your product is affected is to look at the lot code and UPC number."

Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats in both sizes (small to medium and large) are available for sale in central New York at Kinney Drugs stores. Kinney Drugs is headquartered in Gouverneur, NY, with stores in central, northern and western New York state. Kinney Drugs opened its first retail drug store in 1903

Syracuse Dog Training confirmed that none of the packages for sale in either the Camillus or East Syracuse Kinney Drugs are from the recalled lot. However, consumers who purchased this pet treat from Kinney Drugs or other local or online retailers should check each package for a sticker with the lot code BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519.

If the sticker on the side of the package displays the recalled lot code, and the bag is open, seal it to prevent contact with the potentially salmonella contaminated contents. Place the bag of Hartz Naturals Beef Treats into another sealable bag, and discard it in a place protected from pets, children and wildlife. Wash hands thoroughly in hot soapy water after handling the bag, the treats and the disposal process.

Syracuse Dog Training has contacted Kinney Drugs to confirm their refund policies for these recalled pet treats. Watch this column for additional updates for this and other pet food and treat recalls. Read more about pet food and treat recalls:
