On September 3, the Hartz Mountain Corporation announced a voluntary recall of a specific lot of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs, produced by their Brazilian supplier, Bertin S. A. Hartz Mountain issued the recall after a US Food and Drug Administration (USDA) inspection revealed Salmonella contamination in some of the bags. Hartz Mountain is fully cooperating with the USDA, and their press release appears on the FDA website. On recall are nearly 75,000 8-oz bags of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs, lot code BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519. The plastic bags of treats labeled for small and medium dogs have a white and brown terrier on the bag. The large dog sized treat bag features a blue-black great dane on the package. The treats were imported by Hartz from a Brazilian supplier, Bertin S.A., and distributed to a number of customers in the United States. Although Syracuse Dog Training was unable to find any Syracuse pet supply retailers selling these treats, they were sold online via Amazon.com.Regular testing of the Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats conducted by Bertin prior to shipment to the US did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any packages. However, random sample testing conducted by the FDA after the treats arrived in the U.S. indicated the presence of Salmonella. While Hartz Mountain investigates the source of the contamination, they have issued the recall for 74,400 bags of treats from all stores, distribution centers and online resellers. At this time, no illnesses have been reported in either dogs or humans due to consumption of the Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats. Salmonella can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. People with these risks for exposure or compromised immune systems should avoid direct handling of the potentially contaminated treats.Salmonella symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea in both dogs and humans. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek immediate medical attention. Owners of dogs exhibiting these symptoms should seek veterinary assistance for their animals.Consumers who purchased this product should check the lot code on the bag. If the code is not visible, or if the bag has lot code BZ0969101E, immediately discontinue use of the product and discard it in a proper manner. Consumers can contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 at any time for information about obtaining reimbursement for the recalled Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs. Read more about pet food recalls:
