4-H members from across New York state compete Wednesday, September 1 and Thursday, September 2 in the annual 4-H state dog show competitions. Classes include obedience, rally, agility, drill teams and grooming and handling. The NY State Fair 4-H dog show competitions are open to New York state youth from 8 to 19 years of age who are “4-H members … endorsed by a Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator,” and to dogs “trained exclusively by the 4-Her exhibiting that dog.”
Wednesday's competition opened for registration of pre-entered contestants in the Coliseum from 7am to 7:45am. The class schedule for Wednesday, September 1, is:
> 8am: Utility, Open A & B & Beginner A
> 8:15am: Graduate Beginner B, Novice A
> 8:30am: Graduate Beginner A, Beginner B & Agility Excellent (Agility Open, Novice and Pre-Novice will follow the Excellent Class)
> 8:45am: Advanced Novice followed by Graduate Novice
> 3:15pm: Drill Teams (Novice B, Brace, 4-Person & Service Dog will begin as rings become available)
> 4:30pm: 4-H Dog Show Awards in the Coliseum
In 4-H dog shows, the starting time is given for the first class in each ring. Additional listed classes run in sequence after the first class, with a short break between each class. Judges will take additional breaks at their discretion, so rings may not always be active.
Thursday's 4-H competitions will open for registration of pre-entered contestants at 8:30am. Classes on Thursday move to the Youth Arena pole barn adjacent to the 4-H Youth Building. Competition begins at 9am. The class schedule for Thursday, September 2, is:
> 8:30am: Registration for Rally Level 2 & Grooming & Handling (Youth Arena)
> 9:00am: 4-H Dog Show judging in the Youth Arena.
- - - Ring 1: Rally Novice A, followed by Novice B, Advanced, and Excellent
- - - Ring 2: Grooming & Handling C, followed by Grooming & Handling B and then Grooming & Handling A.
Judging will continue in the Youth Arena pole barn until classes conclude
Additional 4-H dog competitions include dog photo and dog video contests, and the 4-H Dog Show Young Poets Writing Challenge. Young poets could enter up to 3 entries in either haiku or limerick. Winning entries in the photo, video and poetry contests were judged earlier and are on display in the 4-H Youth Building Dog Science/Cynology display. 4-H competitions involve many additional categories.
