David Lasker and Max on the rewards of volunteering for pet assistance programs

When David Lasker found himself between jobs due to the economy, he decided to make the best of his time, and volunteer with his Golden Doodle, Max, in the Animal Assisted Therapy Program (AAT) at the San Francisco SPCA. In AAT, David and Max visited hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and nursing homes bringing smiles to the elderly, ailing, and disabled. David and Max found volunteer service satisfying, so David and Max applied to be volunteers in Puppy Dog Tales Literacy Program (PDT). David stated, “I am happy that I found the program. It is one of the most rewarding things I have done.” David went on further to explain “It’s an incredible experience. The kids really respond to dogs. The kids want to learn to read. They pet the dog, and read books.” David could see improvements in the children’s reading skills each week. David and Max are committed to the program and plan to continue volunteering.

All PDT Volunteers begin in the General AAT Programs. According to David, when training for AAT he had to go through orientation and a four-week class. The dogs are observed for disposition. Trainers then give advice to handlers. Handler’s (without their own dog) must shadow an experienced AAT volunteer. Then new AAT volunteers go out as a group for graduation. David stated, “The SPCA does a very thorough job of testing pets. The dogs need a certain personality.” But for PDT, David said the tests were more “rigorous and intensive.” Max had to obtain the “Canine Good Citizen certification.” David and Max had to attend the PDT workshop, which is lead by a committee including: AAT Programs Manager, AAT Dog Trainer, and at least one AAT/PDT Volunteer lead. The workshop teaches handlers the educational and interpersonal skills required to assist children in attaining basic literacy.

Max and other canine participants of PDT have to be successful in the PDT reading trial meaning the dogs need to: execute an extended down stay, ignore multiple distractions, and show confidence settling onto the bed/floor quickly without anxiety. The dogs must pass all tests to participate in PDT.  Jennifer Emmert, PhD, AAT Program Manager states, "The SF/SPCA AAT Office expects volunteers to commit the amount of time, energy, and resources needed to ensure that their pets are kept healthy that their pets’ skills are maintained and augmented as needed to ensure the safety of those we serve. In addition, volunteers must have the interpersonal skills needed to positively engage people with diverse backgrounds, cultural frameworks, medical conditions, and psycho-social concerns."  Furthermore, human handlers must obtain LiveScan fingerprinting, submit proof of TB testing, and observe a current PDT team in the field. Volunteers are responsible for all costs. While the requirements might seem intimidating, David Lasker states, “I can't tell you how much I recommend this program. Not only are you doing a great service for the community and those who need help, but you’re doing this job with your best friend. Being out of work can be frustrating, but when I am out in the field helping people in need, it keeps me in perspective.”
