In a Philadelphia Weekly article published yesterday entitled Pit Bulls in Pain: Court cases reveal Philly's weak history of punishing dogfighters, Mike Newall paints a picture of the current Philadelphia dogfighting scene and shows how the dogfighting issue has not been taken seriously in Philadelphia.
Newall explains how Philadelphia had a history of dogfighting log before Michael Vick was arrested for his involvement in dogfighting. While it has been noted that dogfighting has declined in some areas since Vick's arrest due to increased law enforcement efforts, dogfighting in Philadelphia has been steadily rising since Vick's arrest. In fact, the number of dogfighting cases investigated to date in Philadelphia this year (over 400) is already close to double what it investigated in all of 2008 (237).
George Bengal, the PSPCA's Director of Law Enforcement, informed Newall of the influences Vick has had on Philadelphia's dogfighters, noting that "Philly's always been a Mecca of dogfighting, but after Vick it exploded," said Bengal. "He's an idol." Bengal mentioned that he has arrested dogfighters as young as nine. Bengal went on to note that while Philadelphia has one of the strictest dogfighting laws in the country, dogfighters rarely receive any jail time in Philadelphia.
Newall's article is a must read for anyone wanting to gain an understanding of the true extent of Philadelphia's dogfighting problem.

I think it is crazy that people are treating Vick as an idol. Dog fighting is a ridiculous and cruel thing, and anybody who endorses it is not on my favorites list. What are we going to do about this?? This website has a lot of insightful and great ideas from people like us, with their thoughts on how to STOP DOG FIGHTING!!! bit.ly/FJuKt
America has sunk to a new all-time low in the morals department that now cheers a dog fighter. No amount of legal obligation can erase a lifestyle of animal torture and snuff Vick has enjoyed, and even said throwing family pets into dog fighting rings was funny to watch. The NFL now needs to hire a child molester, which would make a good pair with a dog fighter. America will really cheer with delight - the American public is a bunch of perverts. That's what I think. To cheer a dog fighter.
