28 dogs confiscated from Philadelphia pet store during raid

A Philadelphia pet store was shut down last night and 28 dogs were confiscated following a raid conducted by the PSPCA and four state dog wardens. 

Officials stated that the North Philadelphia pet store, Brickyard Pet Supply, located at 2208 Cecil B. Moore Avenue, was not licensed and was poorly maintained.  The store had been in operation for six months.

An undercover PSPCA officer had purchased a pit bull mix from the store earlier in the day for $400.  Some of the dogs were going for as much as $1000.

The PSPCA reported that the dog they purchased was very sick and had ear infections that were caused by having its ears cropped.  The procedure had been done by someone who was not authorized to perform such a procedure.  Investigators are trying to determine if the dogs were being sold for dogfighting. 

As a result of that purchase, a warrant was obtained for the raid.

The seized dogs were removed from cages in a back room, and were found covered in excrement.  Many of the dogs were very sick.  The majority of the dogs were pit bull mixes.  Most were puppies.The majority of the dogs were pit bull mixes.  Most were puppies.  Some of the dogs had been bred at the store.

Police arrested a man and woman identified as the owners for illegally disfiguring the dog purchased by the PSPCA. 

The seized dogs will be held as evidence in the case.  It is not known at this time if any of the dogs will be available for adoption.
