Celebrate adopt a shelter dog month by adopting a dog. It's October and the ASPCA has declared this to be the month to put off your excuses. If you can, please come out to your local shelter and help make a better life for a pet in need.
Chicago is fortunate to have many dog-friendly locations for you to bring your new pet. Unfortunately, we also have many pets in need of a good home. Check out this list of local shelters to find the one with your next dog.
The dedicated staff at area shelters work with the pets to socialize them and transition them for loving homes. They work with everything from puppies to seniors, all of which can benefit from a loving forever home, perhaps yours.
I have personally gone through the Anti-Cruelty Society on Grand Avenue. I adopted a mixed terrier who was fearful from past mistreatment. He was given a second chance by the good people at the shelter and I scooped him up when he was around two years old. He lived and enjoyed the next ten years, bringing me much joy with his eagerness to play. Dogs have an amazing ability to forgive the past and live in the now. It's a good lesson for all of us and now is the time to act for their benefit.
