The tourist town of Torbay in southwest England has launched a unique ad campaign to encourage people to pick up after their dogs.
They put posters up around town depicting a young child playing in, and eating, dog feces in a park.
Torbay Councillor Dave Butt, the unfortunately named spokesman for a dog dung issue and cabinet member for community services, said that incidents of dog mess have dropped from about 400 in April to 185 in June.
He also states that there have been no complaints about the posters and their shocking imagery. In fact, the locals have given it a warm reception.
“The poster was rather unpleasant, but helped drive the message home very forcibly. We did not have any complaints, but we did have people ringing us to say it was about time and they were pleased we went in so hard.” Butts said.
He stated the campaign would continue, with the message being spread to schools and community groups.
“We are not against dog owners. We are against people that ignore safety and health issues." Butts explained.
According to the Torbay city council, dog feces can contain a parasitic worm which causes an illness called toxocariasis in humans, leading to visual impairment and even blindness. Children are considered to be at more risk of contracting the disease.
