A dog playing fetch in Germany found and delivered a live World War II hand grenade to its owner.
Local police in the western town of Erkrath reported that Sunday they were called by the dog's owner who stopped while walking her pooch when she recognized the "rusty" object it was carrying was a weapon.
“She recognized immediately that it was probably an old, rusted hand grenade,” police said. “On the orders of the woman, the dog obediently put his find back next to the stream.”
She then alerted the authorities who blocked off the area and dispatched a munitions expert who identified the object as a still live American hand grenade from World War II and defused it.
Occasionally left over grenades and bombs from World War II are still often found in Germany. Sometimes whole streets in neighborhoods are evacuated so that such devices can be safely defused.
