For those of us wanting to keep fit, but lacking motivation, a personal trainer can be a good option. But a human version might not be the best option. A study done for British pet care company Bob Martin, has found that your dog just might be the best personal trainer you can get.
The study found that people who have dogs are often more successful at staying fit than those people who don't have a dog. It seems the average dog guardian clocks in more than 8 hours per week exercising their dog, while the average person without a dog only manages 1 hour and 20 minutes of time for exercise per week.
The reason for this difference might lie in perception. Dog walking is generally considered to be fun, while going to the gym is seen as a chore.
The study of 5,000 participants included 3000 dog owners. Of the dog owners, 57 percent see walking the dog as their main form of exercise. 86 percent of dog owners say they always look forward to walking their dog, and 60 percent manage to get the dog out for a walk, no matter what, and only 22 percent find it a chore. Only 16 percent of gym goers look forward to working out, 70 percent think exercise is a chore, and 46 percent regularly find other things to do.
Oh, and incidentally, taking the dog for a brisk, one hour stroll burns off about 250 calories...or about one mincemeat tart or half a cup of rum laced eggnog!
