Fixing Freddie fun look at life with a delinquent beagle

At times lighthearted and cheery, while at others thoughtful and heartfelt, Fixing Freddie (Adams Media; $19.95) is a winsome entry in the ever-popular pet memoir writing sweepstakes that is sure to garner good reviews and a loyal following.

Set in Massachusetts, Fixing Freddie seamlessly shifts among different points in Paula Munier's life as she struggles to make peace with an at times mean-spirited ex-husband, come to terms with an increasingly restless adolescent son, and survive the slow maturation of the canine title character.  In the process, she begins to make sense of it all and develops a deeper understanding of herself while juggling work, motherhood and a tumultuous romantic life amidst the special brand of chaos her furry little friend brings to her world.

Indeed, anyone familiar with the breed who reads this book will cringe knowing first-hand the antics and destruction the diminutive dogs create.  These characteristics, combined with Freddie's seemingly single-minded obsession with becoming the worst beagle ever, set the tone for an unending stream of tragi-comic events inflicted upon the very real author and her sons.  It is only by the grace of her endless supply of maternal patience and red wine that the pint-sized canine terrorist manages to survive.

Fixing Freddie provides remarkable access to Munier's inner world, and the challenges she faces as a single mom will earn her the empathy and respect of many.  Through it all, she manages to remain in good cheer while facing all that life has to offer.

Although many titles emerge in the pet genre each year, few stand the test of time.  Given the obvious depth of feeling and care Munier put into the book, Fixing Freddie should end up being one of those titles that we remember long after others fade away.
