The national organization, Feeding Pets of the Homeless, is a 501(c)3 non-profit run entirely by volunteers and dedicated to providing food for pets belonging to homeless people. For many homeless people, their pet is the only true friend they have. They provide love and even protection. Dogs and cats don't care if their people are homeless. They just need love, attention, veterinary care, and food. FPOTH strives to provide the needed food by taking donations and distributing them to the homeless in various cities across the country. Donations are made at drop locations, such as local veterinary offices and pet stores, picked up and distributed by volunteers. FPOTH also provides grants to veterinary clinics/physicians willing to aid the homeless in vet care for their pets.
Currently, FPOTH is striving to provide collapsible, soft sided kennels to homeless shelters so the shelters will be able to allow pets to stay with their owners. There are currently very few pets-allowed homeless shelters in the US, and the Crate Project would allow some shelters to begin to allow pets. FPOTH will provide the kennels, food and water bowls, and cleaning supplies at no cost to the shelter. They do, however, need the public's monetary support in this endeavor. All donations go directly to support the mission, as can be seen by their willingness to openly post their tax information for the public to view. Homeless shelters interested in this program may contact FPOTH by email or phone at 775.841.7463.
At various times, we all need a little help. Pets of the homeless need your help. There are many ways to aid this organization and, therefore, aid animals. In Alabama, there is currently only one collection site, at the Carriage Hills Animal Hospital in Montgomery. The collection sites are the first line to helping pets of the homeless. Please share this organization's information with your veterinary clinic and encourage them to become a collection site.
