My Kid Could Paint That
What makes art... art?
Whether one believes that Marla Olmstead actually painted her artwork or not, this documentary is truly fascinating. Not only does it question the validity of the so-called "child-prodigy," but it also takes a look into the art world.
The story of Marla Olmstead starts off considerably innocent, but just as any spontaneously popular story progresses, a dark undertone is revealed. How else would a journalist find something more to report on the initial story? The parents fall into the trap of a ruthless media who turns the couple into deceitful, money hungry monsters, and claim Marla to be merely a talentless toddler. After all, wouldn't it be impossible for a young child to produce works that could "easily slipped into museums of modern art" next to Pollock?
Is this occurrence such a rare phenomenon that therefore needs to be discredited or marked fraudulent? Even more, does it deserve to be a victim of slander by the general public who once praised it?
Decide for yourself as you watch the story unfolds. What is truth? What is "news"?
And ultimately, what is art?
