Disney's Give a Day, Get a Disney Day promotion

After the Year of a Million Dreams promotion was stretched into years, Disney tried the What Will You Celebrate promotion. Disney has now retooled the What Will You Celebrate promotion into Give a Day, Get a Disney Day.

The idea of this promotion in Disney’s own words is “to inspire one million people to volunteer a day of service to a participating organization in their communities.” This country has some of the most generous people in the world, and they usually can be counted on to give quite a bit when a disaster happens almost anywhere in the world. According to Associated Press, Americans have donated more than $5 million through their cell phones to help the victims of the recent Haiti earthquake. So it should not be hard to get a few people to give a little right? Well, there is always the small print. You can’t just donate your time to any old cause; they must be approved by Disney and arranged through Disney’s website. It is their promotion after all.

The first step is to go to Disney’s website and start searching for a qualified volunteer opportunity. If you have a family you’ll want to look close at the age requirements. Though Disney advertisements do show families volunteering together, there are age limits and fewer opportunities for the youngsters in some cases. You must be at least 6 years old to volunteer. Children 6 to 17 must also be accompanied by an adult when volunteering.

Depending on where you live, the opportunities will be different. Search your Zip Code and you’ll get lists of opportunities. It’s apparent from a few searches that opportunities for volunteers under the age of 18 may limited. If you want to volunteer, you’d better get moving. Many slots have already been filled.

Helping your community is a good thing, and perhaps those who have never volunteered before will reap rewards greater than a Disney theme park ticket and will continue their service to the community regardless of monetary rewards.

I think it sucks how only kids ages 6 and up are able to "earn" a free ticket, leaving parents of kids ages 3-5 still needing to buy them a ticket.
