Vegan living and diligent exercise well worth the effort

"You probably don't have to work too hard at being thin and fit," someone said to me today.

For just a moment, I wasn't sure how to respond, but then, one by one, the words filled my mouth, and I was ready to give my reply. Unfortunately, someone had changed the subject, and the moment of opportunity had elapsed.

Had I not been interrupted, my response would have sounded something like this:

"It may look as if being thin and fit comes easy to me; however, I can assure you that it doesn't. I look thin and fit because I work hard to be thin and fit. Being healthy is my goal, and I do all that I can to accomplish my goal. Being both thin and fit are my reward for living a life that is very disciplined."

"Generally, I am a vegan. I eat almost no animal foods. Instead, I fill my plate with fresh, colorful, and delicious plant foods that orchestrate a symphony of life-supporting reactions in my body. As T. Colin Campbell states in his book, The China Study, and as Michael Ozner, PhD, claims in his book, The Great American Heart Hoax, the nutrients found in plant-foods together have a synergistic effect -- each element builds on the others, making the diet more than just the sum of its parts."

"I also like to exercise. In fact, I love to ride my bicycle. I ride it to and from work 10 months of the year, twenty miles round trip. It gives me a feeling of control. You see, I never feel stranded. I know that if, for some reason, that I could not drive my car to get somewhere, I could hop on my bike and ride a hundred miles or more, if I had to. "

"I am empowered by the foods that I eat and by the exercise that I do. I have complete control over food and over the mobility of my body."

That, my friend, is worth more than any cheeseburger and fries on any day of the week!
