The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that federal funding has been made available to the State of Arkansas. This funding will assist State and local governments recover from damage caused by severe storms and flooding, which occurred between December 23, 2009 and January 2, 2010.
Beginning on Christmas Eve 2009, record-setting rain fell across central and eastern Arkansas flooding homes, roads, and shutting down part of Interstate 30. Power failures were reported throughout the State. At Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, travelers were left frustrated and stranded due to snow delays in other mid-west states.
The funding made available will be provided on a cost-sharing basis to State, eligible local governments, and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and repair or replacement of roads, bridges, schools, utilities, and other public facilities damaged by the event. This funding is available in the counties of Bradley, Calhoun, Clark, Clay, Cleveland, Craighead, Dallas, Drew, Grant, Greene, Hempstead, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lincoln, Lonoke, Miller, Monroe, Nevada, Ouachita, Poinsett, Prairie, White, and Woodruff.
