Aspartame linked to brain cancer?

dingo.care2.com

In a recent United Kingdom documentary, “Sweet Misery,” the National Cancer Institute identified an alarming increase in the number of brain cancer cases starting in 1984.

In aswering the question, why did brain cancer shoot up? The evidence appears to point to an increase in the use of artificial sweeteners such as those found in diet drinks and food.

Scientists noticed that in 1983 humans began consuming a specific substance that had never been consumed before, a new sugar substitute created chemically and used in diet drinks, food, and even on the table in most restaurants (i.e. NutraSweet and Equal).

The studies appeared to suggest that with the increase in use of Aspartame there was a concurrent increase in Brain Cancer

According to the documentary, in 1984, one year after its introduction, 6.9 million pounds of aspartame were consumed by Americans. In the next year, that number doubled. It continued increasing into the ’90s. The increase in Aspartame consumption occurred in a similar spike as did the increase in cases of brain cancer.

Interestingly during the years 1984 to1987, non-brain related cancers remained the same or declined while brain cancer rates shot up.

Scientists confirmed that the increase in brain cancers is not due to technological advancements that made diagnosing brain cancer easier and it is not a result of changes in disease classifications.

Why is it suggested that aspartame has this neurological effect?

Scientists think that it is because 10 percent of the chemical substance, after ingestion, becomes free methyl alcohol (wood alcohol), which as one scientist in the film states, is a “real poison.” Another says, “the poisonous effect of methyl alcohol and its methyl esters are well-known.” Even small amounts of this poison can lead to blindness and death. The “miniscule” amounts in our common foods and drinks seem to sometimes lead to cancer and other neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

The fact is you may need to reduce or stop using artificial sweeteners.

As a registered dietitian, I am disappointed to see this inaccurate information, which is very misleading for readers. Aspartame has more than 200 scientific studies confirming its safety as a low-calorie sweetener, has been used for more than 20 years and is approved in more than 100 countries. The National Cancer Institute released findings which found that consumption of aspartame-containing beverages did not increase the risk of leukemias, lymphomas and brain tumors. Eight of the world's leading toxicologists recently concluded that aspartame is safe in, "Aspartame: A Safety Evaluation Based on Current Use Levels," which was published in Critical Reviews in Toxicology. This expert panel was convened to review more than 500 published scientific studies, articles and reports on aspartame to determine its safety. Several regulatory agencies and scientific committees have conducted thorough reviews of aspartame's safety. All concluded that aspartame is safe.

On www.mpwhi.com scroll down to banners and read the Board of Inquiry Report of the FDA which revoked the petition for approval. It would have been signed into law if Don Rumsfeld hadn't "called in his markers". Google Meet Donald Rumsfeld, another clip from the movie Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World and you'll see how it was done. Notice they revoked it because of the brain tumor issue and, of course, it couldn't be proven safe. The FDA tried to have Searle indicted for fraud. Click on Aspartame News and read some of the histories. Aspartame breaks down to diketopiperazine, a brain tumor agent. Also read the infamous Bressler Report how Searle excised brain tumors, put rats back in the study and when they died resurrecred them on paper. Yes, they kept doing studies because they couldn't get aspartame to show safety. Aspartmae was approved through the political chicanery of rumsfeld and not science. The Ramazzini Studies confirm aspartame is a multipotential carcinogen. Poison!

To the Registered Dietitian: Jan Tilley---I want to encourage you to watch the documentary Sweet Misery, a Poisoned World. I gave it to a dietitian who was convinced it was safe, too. She watched it, and brought it back to me, with a completely different oppinion than before. You cannot argue with voices like Dr Russell Blaylock MD, H.J. Roberts MD, numerous Scientists, Bio-chemists, and Betty Martini....who are all on the video. Cori Brackett did her homework, and took the time to research how aspartame got approved, when the FDA actually FOUGHT against it going to the market for 16 years (did you know that?)because they KNEW it caused brain tumors, and grand-mal seizures in monkeys.
Do you think there just might be a chance....that you have bought the lie, and have been brain-washed by glossy medical journals, and propoganda paid for..... by BIG PHARMA? Of course, they are going to say it's safe. I have watched people all around me die of cancer who have been Diet soda drinkers!

So Jan Tilley.. what branch of the FDA employs you? I am an ASPARTAME SURVIVOR! These people KNOW what they are talking about. I feel I got 'off' the junk in time, but there are so many others who haven't. One piece of Orbit gum loaded with this white stuff send ME into Orbit. You cannot find ONE stick of gum on the shelves today that isn't sugarless, which means our children are chewing on it.
You can cite all the references in the world...but to me.. something with so much controversy surrounding it, should be totally avoided. Stuff never made ME thin!! It's a poison.
Your toxicologists were probably paid by the giants that produce this poison... little Donald Rumsfeld puppets. I conclude Aspartame is NOT safe. Enjoy your diet coke. When you are reduced to a dribbling vegetable, I hope your memory remains intact.

Jan Tiliey may be a registered dietitian, but she is unaware of the truth about aspartame.

I have studied aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) for over 20 years because it caused a drastic personality change and intellectual deterioration in my daughter. She also developed epileptic-type seizures and began to lose the vision in both eyes.

She consulted a neurologist, and he told her that she had temporal lobe epilepsy. He began treating her with medication, but the medication didn’t work,
because the doctor was wrong in his diagnosis and he was treating her for a condition she didn’t have! What she really had was a reaction to ASPARTAME

To follow up, we took our daughter to Boston for special studies on her brain, and the doctors confirmed that it was the NutraSweet that had made her so sick.

They said that she had been totally misdiagnosed by the neurologist and that she did not have temporal lobe epilepsy at all. Her problem was aspartame. Jan Tiliey should not mislead peo

since when are chemicals not "natural things?" What exactly is your definition of natural? There are chemicals in everything we breath and eat.

There is clearly a difference between a substance that is produced by nature and one that is produced in a laboratory. Sugar as an alternative might not be good for you in excess, but your body recognizes it as food. These artificial products are well artificial. I would point out that in the seventies, we were told eat margarine not butter by the nutritionists of the time, putting hundreds of dairy farmers out of business, but turns out the trans fats in margarines were worse for us than the butter. Maybe our grandparents had it right, eat natural in moderation and work hard. We eat artificial in excess and sit on our collective butts.

The point of the movie ‘Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World’ was to find out whether claims of aspartame’s effects were true or “conspiracy theory”. 7000 miles of travel and face-to-face talks with the players sheds a lot of light on this subject.
This documentary and it’s sequel, ‘Sweet Remedy’ are great sources of information on aspartame. Aspartame is a neurotoxin.

It's great seeing so many honest, goodhearted, reasonable, intelligent posts about toxins.

A lot of suffering is from the body's natural, rapid conversion of small amounts of methanol (wood alcohol) into the potent toxins, formaldehyde and thence to formic acid. Formaldehyde is in many products, ranging from wood and tobacco smoke to furniture and plywood to cleansers to mobile homes.

There's about the same amount of methanol in most wines and all aspartame drinks -- the major cause of "morning after the night before" hangover headaches.

The cheap, safe vitamin folic acid helps most people handle methanol and formaldehyde safely -- thus protecting the fetus in a mother's womb from birth defects.

To read my detailed reviews of mainstream science on these toxins the last ten years, Google "AspartameNM, Rich Murray" -- Yes we will... Win this one...

I read your article linking aspartame to brain cancer and wanted to respond. Since joining the Calorie Control Council - a non-profit trade association that represents the light food and beverage industry - I've spent a lot of time researching low-calorie sweeteners and fat replacers. Despite the online claims of many critics, the safety of aspartame is documented by one of the most extensive and thorough safety testing programs ever conducted on a food additive. Hundreds of studies of humans and animals, conducted across a broad range of areas, clearly indicate that aspartame does not cause any adverse health effects. In fact, a group of leading experts in the areas of toxicology, epidemiology, metabolism, pathology, biostatistics, etc., recently examined more than 500 studies evaluating a possible link between aspartame and behavior, reproductive health, neurological functions, cancer and tumor development, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, allergies, depression and seizures, hyperactiv
