Dirt track racing started in the mid-twenties and has been the stepping stone for current and hall of fame NASCAR drivers. There are over one hundred dirt tracks in Kansas and surrounding states, and attendance averages can exceed 100,000 fans every weekend.
For Kansas and surrounding states, the 2009 race season is over. For every race car team this year there have been great memories and ones they would rather forget. Racing is a commitment of money, time and a lot of hard work for everyone involved on the team. After spending hundreds of hours building and preparing their race cars during the season, some teams will be getting together and committing to race another year.
Dirt track racing is not only a big commitment, but also risky each time the driver gets behind the wheel. The modified, late model and sprint car divisions seem to hook up better and get faster every year. It's not unusual to see great side by side racing at local tracks every weekend. This makes for an exciting race for the fans, but in open wheel racing a slight mistake can be disastrous. After seeing one of these accidents you wonder why these courageous men and women love to race, even when there is a risk of being seriously hurt. One of the purposes of writing articles on Examiner.com is to sit down and interview some of these drivers, and ask that question.
I'm honored to tell you that my first interview will be with John Allen. John is one of many from the Midwest who have excelled as a modified driver. Those who have watched John race for so many years will hopefully enjoy the interview. If you would like to suggest a question to ask John, please contact me. I will also entertain ideas on who you think would be an interesting interview.
This page will interview track owners, chassis builders, crew members and fans throughout the Midwest. With your support and suggestions, we can showcase some individuals that makes dirt track racing the greatest sport in the nation.
