Joe Perry's 'Boneyard Brew' hot sauce

Perry can cook with a Les Paul

Last week, I wrote an article on hot sauce with the focus on the Louisiana Style.  Personally, I was a bit surprised to discover that the first known pepper sauces came from Massachusetts, but that fact made me think of another Massachusetts product who markets his own hot sauce, Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

Joe Perry was born September 10, 1950 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.   He began performing with Tom Hamilton in “The Jam Band” and both later joined Steven Tyler in “Aerosmith”.  The band’s first big album, “Toys in the Attic”, (1975), featured the song “Walk this Way” which was not only a big rock hit, it was also often featured at discos during their “rock set”.  We always knew Perry could cook on a Les Paul, but who knew he also like to cook in the kitchen in his spare time?

The small bottle with the big heat

Joe has two recipes of “Rock Your World” hot sauces, one of which is featured on a quesadilla appetizer at the Hard Rock cafe.  Joe has appeared on an episode of “Inside Dish” with Rachael Ray and once was part owner of the Mount Blue restaurant in Norwell, Massachusetts.  Since Aerosmith was one of my favorite bands in college and I have always been a fan of hot, spicy sauces, I had to give his recipe a try.

I found the sauce on-line at www.joeperrysrockyourworld.com.  Even for a specialty hot sauce it is not cheap at $7.99 for five ounces.  Add in the shipping charge and you are looking at $13 for a tiny bottle of the brew, but expect it to come quickly.  I ordered on Thursday afternoon and the sauce showed up at my door Saturday morning.

We liked it on Tricuits with cheese.

It is a good hot sauce with a nice flavor and a lot of bight, but it hardly warrants the price.  We tried it by itself, on crackers with cheese, in a soup, on rice and even on veggie meat loaf.  It performed admirably, but, at those prices, you don’t want to use it as an everyday sauce.  It has a sweet, smoky flavor that comes from the chipotle peppers and good level of heat that comes from habaneros.  I liked the sauce and I would not avoid it, but I am not likely to buy it too often at those prices.  There are many, other hot sauces that are just as good, but cost a lot less.  Joe’s sauce is a good product that warrants at least a taste by every pepper and sauce lover, but it is not likely to become a household name very soon.

Thanks for sharing - I also found this sauce to be quite tasty but too pricey for my pocketbook.
