Hope Sandoval - new music, new tour. Photo: Nettwerk Records.
Hope Sandoval, the pensive voice behind the alternative/dream pop act Mazzy Star (remember the 1993 hit, “Fade Into You”?) is releasing her new CD, “Through The Devil Softly,” on September 29, but you can download “Trouble,” a preview song, right now.
The new 11-track album follows (slowly!) “Bavarian Fruit Bread,” Sandoval's 2001 album with the Warm Inventions (which, BTW, has been re-released in digital format on iTunes and Amazon).
As on the previous album, Sandoval is partnered with My Bloody Valentine’s Colm Ó Cíosóig. Sandoval’s soft, breathy voice, paired with atmospheric guitar washes, creates a hypnotic sound that has been dubbed “slowcore” or “gothic country.” It’s not the kind of music that hits you over the head; instead, it seduces you with an eerie, melodic melancholy.
Next month, Sandoval and O'Ciosoig will hit the road for the first time in eight years, taking their live show to intimate concert venues across North America. Here are the dates for Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions:
Sept 21 - Portland, OR (The Doug Fir)
Sept 22 - Vancouver, BC (The Red Room)
Sept 23 - Seattle, WA (The Crocodile)
Sept 25 - Arcata, CA (The Arcata Theatre Lounge)
Sept 26 - San Francisco, CA (The Fillmore)
Sept 29 - Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Forever Cemetery)

Mazzy Star is still together, silly.
Good catch. I should have said "from," not "ex-" Mazzy Star. The band hasn't appeared together since a short set at a party in 2003. Sandoval said in an interview earlier this year that Mazzy Star is working on a new album. Let's hope so!
